Whether you're new to crystal healing, or have been collecting and working with crystals for a while, great crystal books are essential to help you on your journey. That said, as there are so many different books to choose from, it can be really hard to decide which one is right for you.
The books below (in no particular order) are our go-to crystal books that we refer to over and over ... you can tell that they are well-loved by their battered appearance. Hopefully you'll get a better feel for these books with our explanation of why we love them.
The Crystal Bible 1, 2 & 3
The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall is one of the most popular crystal books available. This is the first book in a series of 3 that Judy Hall wrote and it covers 200 of the most common crystals. This is a book that we use regularly, the pages in our book are well worn. Our only complaint is that sometimes the photos do not look like they do in real life. Apart from that, it's a great reference book and is one of the first books we reach for. If you're new to the world of crystals, this edition of The Crystal Bible is a great choice.
The Crystal Bible 2 and The Crystal Bible 3 cover the rarer / more uncommon crystals as well as those that have been found in recent times. The Crystal Bible 2 contains an additional 200 crystals (which are not in volume 1), and The Crystal Bible 3 contains an additional 250 crystals (which are not in volume 1 or 2). Whilst our copies of Crystal Bibles 2 and 3 are not as 'dog-eared' as our Crystal Bible 1, they are still used often and are great companions to the original Crystal Bible.
Crystals for Energy Healing
Ashley Leavy's book Crystals for Energy Healing is one of our favourite crystal books for beginners. Ashley explains what crystals actually are, ways to use the crystals, how to sense the energy of crystals and how to choose which crystal is right for you. It's like a mini course in crystal healing! One of the best features of the book are the guides for crystal healing layouts and crystal grids - when you haven't used crystals like this before it's great to have templates to follow. Crystals for Energy Healing also includes information on the legendary uses and history of each crystal (if there is any). We may be a bit biased about this book however it really is a wonderful book to have in your collection. After reading this book Georgie did several courses with Ashley, plus completed her Advanced Crystal Practitioner Certification Program.
Crystals for Positive Manifestation
Crystals for Positive Manifestation by Sarah Bartlett is another favourite of ours. It is from the same publishers that produced Crystals for Energy Healing by Ashley Leavy. With both of these books in your crystal library you can't go wrong - they complement each other. Sarah Bartlett's book contains information on 100 different crystals and includes historical information, instructions on how to use the crystals as well as their healing benefits. It is set out in a similar fashion to Ashley Leavy's book, however contains lots of different information. This is a great book for beginners.
Love is in the Earth
Whilst not really a crystal book for beginners, this is the holy grail for crystal books and deserves a mention. Crystal books by Melody are now out of print and are collector items. In fact, used copies of Melody's books are being sold for ridiculous prices. Melody was the crystal expert who discovered Super Seven, also known as Melody Stone, and is considered to have been the leading author of crystal books. There are several different books that Melody has written however if you are going to splash out and treat yourself to one of Melody's books we recommend 'LOVE IS IN THE EARTH: The Crystal and Mineral Encyclopedia - The LIITE Fantastic and The Last Testament'. The title of this book isn't the only thing that is big - the book itself is big (and heavy). In our opinion, this is by far the best book that Melody wrote, there will be crystals in it that you've never heard of, plus it has pictures to refer to. Melody's other popular book Love is in the Earth - A Kaleidoscope of Crystals is another great book, however it doesn't contain pictures.
The Crystal Healer Volume 1 & 2
The Crystal Healer by Philip Permutt is categorised by colours which is particularly useful if you are trying to identify a crystal. For instance, say you have a yellow crystal that you can't remember what it is, go to the yellow section in the book and see if you can find a match by looking at the pictures. Another great feature is the Crystal Remedies at the back of the book where you will find pages of crystal suggestions for physical or emotional ailments, and spiritual or lifestyle enhancements (for example if you suffer from panic attacks you can read which crystals can help). The Crystal Healer Volume 2 follows on from the original book. Not only are there new crystals in this version, Philip Permutt has also expanded on some crystals that are in the original book. It is worthwhile having both volumes, we use them all the time.
Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro
Crystal Muse by Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro is a book you'll come back to over and over. Inside you will discover many different crystal rituals that are easy to follow such as a 'New Moon Wishes Ritual', the 'Space Clearing Ritual', the 'Money Magnet Ritual', the 'New Beginning Ritual' or the '40 Day Love Ritual'. There is also a 'Crystal Crash Course' at the beginning of the book which is really handy. The pictures in this 'crystal recipe book' are just stunning and the photos of the crystals are true to life. Crystal Muse is a book for your coffee table that you can sit down and relax with.
If you are looking for clear, meaningful information about crystals, as well as accurate historical information then Nicholas Pearson is your go-to man. Nicholas has written several bestselling books however you can't go past Crystal Basics for everyday use. Crystal Basics covers 200 different gemstones and includes lots of sciencey information such as the stone's chemical formula, rating on the Mohs scale of hardness, the crystal system and formation process. You'll also find listed the various chakras that each crystal relates to. One of our favourite parts of this book is how Nicholas Pearson shows you how to 'decode' a crystal. By this he means how to work out what the healing benefits of a particular crystal is based on its formation process, how hard it is and it's colour.
Lastly, if you love reading about the history of crystals, we suggest you also grab yourself a copy of Nicholas' book Stones of the Goddess. Stones of the Goddess was recommended to us by Ashley Leavy for its thoroughly researched historical content, as well as the connection of the crystals to the Devine Feminine. This book delves into over 100 different crystals and is jam packed with information on healing properties, magickal uses, elemental and astrological information, Goddess archetypes and formation process. Both Crystal Basics and Stones of the Goddess are perfect for beginners as well as crystal gurus.
Crystals by Jennie Harding has been written in plain English and is really easy to follow. The photography in this book is awesome, and as it is categorised by colours, it's another great book to help you identify crystals. This book covers information on how each crystal formed, what it's structure is, what colours the crystal contains, where the crystal can be found, how rare (or not) the crystal is, as well as the hardness of the crystal on the Mohs scale. In addition, Jennie Harding lists the healing properties of the crystals and explains how to work with them. There is also information on how our ancestors used crystals historically.
The Crystal Code
Tamara Driessen shares her journey with crystals and it is written as if a friend is telling you a story. It will (hopefully) leave you feeling calm and inspired to work with your crystals more. The Crystal Code explains how to activate your crystals, how to cleanse them as well as how to connect with them. This book explores 70 different crystals and teaches you how they can be used for crystal healing. Basically everything that a beginner needs to know is in this book - it's one of our favourites!
