If there was one crystal that could really draw you in based on its beauty, Labradorite would have to be at the top of the list. Labradorite's flash is hard to resist - this is one crystal that leaves me with zero willpower when it comes to saying no to more crystals!
What is Labradorite?
Labradorite was first discovered in the town of Labrador in Canada in the 18th century and is a common part of the Earth's crust. The spectacular colours you can see on Labradorite is called Labradorescence - this flash occurs when light shines on the crystal. There is a very rare, gem quality, variety of Labradorite called Spectrolite which displays a full spectrum of rainbow colours.
This stone rates as a 6-6½ on the Moh’s scale of hardness, which means that it could be scratched by a Quartz crystal (which is a 7), so be careful if these 2 crystals are in contact with each other.
Labradorite history & lore
Legend has it that the Inuit's believed that the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, had fallen from the sky and had become trapped in the rock. A brave warrior, tasked with setting the Northern Lights free, struck the rocks with his spear and managed to free most of the lights. There were however, some lights that remained trapped in the rocks, and these resulted in the Labradorescence that we can see today in Labradorite.
